Tim Hudak the leader of the Progressive Conservatives announced that if elected in October he plans to do away with the EcoFees that are charged on most if not all Electronic devices. While this is a great idea, I can't see it happening. The Program called "Ontario Electronic Stewardship" was created by Ernie Eves when he was Premier and it's an arms length agency of the Provincial government with the task of disposing of electronic devices so they don't enter our landfil sites. To date they have collected about 44 million dollars and a small percentage of that money, and for that matter a small percentage of old electronic devices has been diverted from ending up in our landfil sites.
I don't care if you are Liberal, Conservative, NDP, or Green, but don't you think it's about time that we stop taxing the consumer and place the tax on the people who make these products. An idea I heard from the Ontario Green Party was to take the ecofees, which is still a tax and charge it to companies that make these devices instead of the consumer. If a company invests into making products which once disposed don't harm the environment then they would receive tax incentives or rebates for producing these types of products.
We as consumers are taxed to death, and it's about time that we elect a government who will look out for the best interests of the middle and lower class. The Liberals break their promises time and time again, and the label of them being a tax and spend party is true. The PC's are all for big business, lower taxes, and cutting services like they did during the mid-1990's and into early the 2000's. It's great to cut taxes, but you also need the revenue to support our social programs, our education and health care systems, and the other functions of government. So if we cut taxes, we must ensure that the revenue is still in place to support our vast programs across Ontario. The NDP experiment from 1990-1995 was a complete failure in my eyes. People elected the NDP because they were sick of the Liberals and the PC's.
I can see the platforms of the political parties now.
The Liberals will come out with a platform which promises we'll do this and we'll do that if you re-elect us, and they will paint a picture of Tim Hudak as a Mike Harris clone who will destroy our health and education systems in Ontario, download more services to our towns and cities because hey we have to get rid of the 19 billion deficit left behind by the Liberals.
The PC's will come out with a platform that promises that we care for Ontario families, we will get rid of the Ecofees, the Health tax, they will reduce our energy costs, and maybe even go back and ask the Federal government for a better deal on the HST. They will campaign by saying are you better off now then you were 8 years ago, and if you elect us we will keep our promises.
The NDP will come out with a platform that promises that we will invest more money for our poor, we will give the unions a better deal, we will tax the rich so we can increase our social programs, and they will most likely follow the PC's by saying we will keep our promises and not lie to you the voter if you just give us another kick at the can.
The Greens will come out with a platform that will focus on reducing taxes for companies that invest in Green technology, and help protect our farming communities and help with vital services that are needed in rural Ontario, and I'm sure that they will also say that look, the other 3 parties have had a kick at the can and look at what they've done to this province.
What can I tell ya, except that starting January 2011 the election campaign begins and I know it will be a great ride watching all the parties work hard for your vote come election day.
Until next time!
