Vetting Candidates, PC Style!

Salman Farooq, right, appeared with Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak (centre) and Scarborough-Guildwood candidate Gary Ellis at a news conference in January.

While everyone's attnetion is focused on the Federal Election, I'm sure the PC party is kind of glad that one of there own is not front page news. Usually I would not comment on a current or former candidate being charged with a crime, but I'm not a usual person.

The guy on the right, Salman Farooq, the former candidate who was arrested Wednesday on 14 fraud and identity theft charges that go back to 2007. While other party MPPs, including PC Leader Tim Hudak, dodged questions on the former candidate from Pickering-Scarborough-East, Jim Wilson (Simcoe Grey) was left to answer questions on how Farooq could have got the nomination and then be charged with those serious offences. “I think it is appropriate that he’s not our candidate anymore,” Wilson said, adding that the party has a vetting process for potential candidates “and they did the best they could.”

Having been a Provincial candidate myself I can tell you that the Liberals do an extensive background check on all of their candidates, and this includes asking for copies of a recent credit check, and a police background check. They also ask for financial statements, and ask for a list of friends and business connections so they can ask questions about you. For Wilson to make a comment like "He's not our candidate anymore", is very lame in my books. If the PC party had done an extensive background check they would have most likely realized that something was not right.

So Mr. Hudak if you want to form a government you might want to make sure that all of the candidates running for your party are who they say they are, and are not hiding anything that might come back and bite you in the butt.

Until next time!
