We are 4 months away from the next Provincial election and already things are starting to heat up. The Green Party of Ontario early this week were the first out of the gate with their platform. It promises to bring in a carbon tax, and also give more power to our local communities in the decision making of how our communities can grow. They want the decisions to be made at the local level and not by someone sitting behind a desk at Queens Park. They also promise to get rid of the deficit by 2015.
The Ontario PC party held their convention in Toronto this weekend, and Tim Hudak made a series of promises which include wiping out the deficit by 2017, investing billions more in health care and education. He also promised to remove the 8% HST on home energy costs. Just to touch on that part for a second. If Hudak gets rid of the Provincial portion of the HST on our hydro bills will he still keep the 10% reduction that the Liberals put into place? He also plans to get rid of the debt retirement charge, and he also plans to reduce personal and corporate taxes to the tune of 7.2 billion over the next 4 years. He won't get rid of the health tax, and for the most part he intends to keep most of the Liberal policies in place. With all these tax reductions, which means less revenue coming into the Provincial government, Hudak promises to increase spending by billions, but does not have a plan on how he intends to pay for his spending increase.
The Liberals also held a rally in Vaughan this weekend and had over 1800 people attend to upstage the PC convention, and it seemed to work. However we still have not seen the Liberal or NDP platforms as of yet and I'm sure they will be interesting to read.
So sit back everyone as this election will be much more interesting then the Federal Election.
Until next time!
